One way to motivate middle school students is to make them feel good about where they go to school. Research shows that supportive environments help students. An idea to make the school better is to support and encourage school spirit.
Encourage School Spirit
Encouraging school spirit activities for the entire building can bring a sense of belonging for students, and it is just plain fun. However, teachers need to "buy" into the whole process before school spirit can thrive. A supportive environment is key to students and teachers feeling good about where they spend seven hours of their day each day
"But perhaps most important in determining the school environment is the quality of students’ relationships with other students and with the school’s staff." says Eric Schaps, Ph.D. in the article, "The Role of Supportive School Environments in Promoting Academic Success" at the website GettingResults.org. When students' feel that they belong, are safe, have autonomy and are competent, they are more likely to become involved in school. To encourage students to be involved in school activities, teachers and students need to complete activities that support a positive school environment.
