Yesterday the fine folks at TVNZ issued a press release. This is no real big shocking piece of information because usually big television companies make announcements every week. Most press releases don’t get to much attention from the public. However this was not the case yesterday when TVNZ announced that they are changing the Coronation Street timeslot from 7.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, to 5.30pm weekdays. This news has been met with a ton of criticisim in the last 24 hours, some of the worst feedback that the television company has had since they were formed years ago.
Newspaper Article Heats Up The Controversy
The NZ Herald newspaper and website were hot on the heels of TVNZ today when an article appeared in the paper and online. In the article it states that TVNZ has been hit with a flood of complaints and there is now an online petition that has almost 2,000 signatures as of 10.30am today. Less than 24 hours since the controversial announcement. There is a facebook page dedicated to moving the popular Coronation Street back to the original timeslot of 7.30pm. Today is quite possibly the worst day that TVNZ has had in recent memory.
Why The Change???
The reason behind the timeslot change for Coronation Street is not as straight forward as people seem to think. The usual timeslot for the programme is going to be replaced by Masterchief Australia, and this has people up in arms claiming it makes a mockery of the networks respect for consumers. TVNZ say that the reason behind this move is party due to ratings, and “there are some very racy storylines coming up” but people are not buying it for a second. You would think that if there were some slightly racy storylines coming up on the show it would be put back to a later timeslot, not to a time when most kids are still up and about. Most parents and elderly who watch the show are cooking meals or popping their kids into bed at this time. Hasn’t television got enough cooking shows at the moment anyway???
