It was standing-room only in the Sensorama tasting room at Château de Villa in Sierre (canton Valais), the small city that is the self-proclaimed ‘’Swiss capital of wine,’’ as some 50 people—winemakers, enologists, connoisseurs, wine writers—gathered to sample nine Chasselas wines, Swiss and not, on April 7, 2011.
The tasting was led by Dr. José Vouillamoz. Vouillamoz, a researcher associated with the University of Neuchâtel, is the man who, in 2009, co-published with Dr. Claire Arnold findings on the origins of the Chasselas grape. The study, carried out with financial support from the Communauté Interprofessionnelle du Vin Vaudois and the Confrérie des Vignerons de Vevey, narrowed the grape's origins down to the Lake Léman (Lake Geneva) area, most probably around Lausanne (canton Vaud).
Anne-Dominique Zufferey, the director of the Musée valaisan de la Vigne et du Vin (Valais vine and wine museum), co-hosted the evening with Dr. Vouillamoz.
